What does it really mean to be "coachable"?

Updated: Nov 29, 2023

Being coachable is an empowering quality for young women, fostering personal and professional growth. Coaches aren't looking for players who can't adjust or take criticism, but there is more to it than just that. The top players in every sport have one thing in common, they are continuously learning and adapting. Allowing your coach to freely make suggestions to improve your game and absorbing the advice to show you are invested in improving is what coachability is all about. Here's how being coachable can be set you apart from others:

  1. Have Confidence in Learning: Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow with confidence. Being coachable means recognizing your potential and having the self-assurance to explore new skills and knowledge.

  2. Cultivate Adaptability and Grace: Life is full of changes, and being coachable allows you to navigate these changes with resilience and a positive attitude, demonstrating that you can handle anything that comes your way shows you care. Smile through the mistakes and ask questions. It is a learning process after all, so give yourself some slack.

  3. Show Strength in Vulnerability: Understand that being open to feedback is a strength, not a weakness. Vulnerability is a powerful tool for personal development, and by embracing it, you show strength in your willingness to learn and improve. If you mess up, stop and say "Well that wasn't good. Did you see something I could have done differently?" or simply "That didn't feel right, were my mechanics off?"

  4. Embrace Sisterhood and Support: Recognize that seeking guidance doesn't diminish your capabilities; it enhances them. A coachable spirit fosters a sense of sisterhood and support among women, creating a collaborative environment where everyone can thrive. Be sure to point out solid examples from others.

  5. Effectively Communicate and Connect: Being coachable involves not only listening but also expressing your thoughts and ideas. Establishing clear communication channels with mentors and peers creates a network of understanding, trust and support.

  6. Take Bold Initiative: Pursue your goals unapologetically. Being coachable isn't just about waiting for guidance; it's about actively seeking opportunities for growth. Show initiative in your personal and professional endeavors.

  7. Radiate Resilience: Face your challenges head on and stay the course. Life is full of ups and downs, and being coachable means facing setbacks with resilience and maintaining a radiant spirit that can overcome obstacles. Many coaches will say "Trust the Process" and it is so true. They have a vision for you and sometimes you need to push through the ugliness in order to see it.

  8. Commit to Action, Not Perfection: Understand that perfection is not the goal; action is. Being coachable involves a commitment to taking steps towards your goals, even if they're small. Focus on progress rather than perfection.

  9. Celebrating Sister Success: Celebrate the success of your peers. A coachable attitude involves recognizing and appreciating the achievements of others, creating a supportive community where everyone can shine.

  10. Positive Self-Talk and Empowerment: Foster a positive internal dialogue. Being coachable means empowering yourself with encouraging thoughts and affirmations. Cultivate a mindset that believes in your abilities and potential.

In essence, being coachable as a young woman involves embracing your strengths, seeking support from a community of peers and mentors, and taking bold steps towards your goals with resilience and a positive attitude. It's about celebrating the unique strengths and contributions of women in various fields and creating a supportive environment for collective growth and success.
