Power hitting - every day is leg day if you want to gain power

In softball, as in many other sports, generating power involves the coordinated movement of the entire body, including the legs. The legs are fundamental in softball hitting because they initiate the kinetic chain, transfer energy, and create a strong foundation for the entire swing.

In the spirit of education, let's take a hot second to learn about why your coaches and trainers are always stressing the importance of leg power.


It's science! Here's how legs contribute to generating power when hitting in softball:

  1. Weight Transfer: The power in a softball swing starts with the batter's stance. As the pitch is delivered, the batter shifts their weight to the back leg (loading phase). This weight transfer helps store potential energy in the muscles of the back leg.

  2. Stride: After the weight is shifted to the back leg, the batter initiates a stride towards the pitcher with the front foot. Sometimes it is just a simple lift and replacement of the front foot (it doesn't have to be a big step). This stride helps create momentum and facilitates the transfer of the stored energy from the back leg to the front leg.

  3. Hip Rotation: As the stride is completed, the batter begins to rotate their hips. The rotation of the hips is a key component in generating power. The energy stored in the legs is transferred to the torso through the rotation of the hips.

  4. Transfer of Energy: The energy generated by the legs and hips is transferred up the kinetic chain, involving the core and upper body. The hands and the bat follow this energy transfer, creating a powerful and efficient swing.

  5. Ground Reaction Force: The batter generates force against the ground through the legs. This ground reaction force contributes to the power of the swing. The back foot often pivots, allowing the batter to push off the ground and use the energy stored in the leg muscles.

  6. Torque and Leverage: The twisting motion created by the rotation of the hips and the push against the ground creates torque. This torque, combined with the leverage provided by the extended arms, results in a powerful swing.

  7. Balance and Stability: Proper weight distribution and balance are crucial for a powerful swing. The legs provide stability, allowing the batter to control the swing and generate maximum power.

In summary, the legs play a crucial role in providing power and stability during a softball swing. Proper technique, including effective weight transfer, hip rotation, and leveraging the ground reaction force, allows players to maximize the power generated by their legs during a softball hit. If it looks uncomfortable or unbalanced, there may be a break in the kinetic chain and something isn't "firing" at the proper time. If a player is swinging with all arms, they will nevery untap their full power potentional.
